Southern Oil Promotes Canola Oil as the Ultimate Choice for Health-Conscious Consumers

With a mission to be a sustainable leader in the development and production of high-quality healthier alternative oils, Southern Oil (SOILL) continues to champion the benefits of canola oil as the go-to choice for consumers.

"We are proud to promote canola oil as a cooking oil alternative for the health-conscious consumer,” says Morne Botes, Commercial Director at Southern Oil. "Our commitment to quality, coupled with endorsements from leading health organisations, underscores the value of canola oil in promoting overall wellness."

Since its introduction to the Western Cape in 1993, canola has gained significant traction among local farmers and consumers alike.

Today, Southern Oil proudly works with over 500 local producers in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces and operates the largest canola seed-crushing and oil manufacturing operation on the African continent.

Due to the increased demand for healthier cooking oil, Southern Oil launched its retail brand B-well in 2010.

B-well has been founded on the principle that everyone in South Africa deserves access to delicious, healthier food options – in fact, the brand’s slogan is Ingredients for Better Living. Here are just some of the reasons why Southern Oil is proud to promote canola oil to its customers.

Homegrown and GMO-free

Many consumers have concerns about the increase of foods made from genetically modified ingredients, so it’s good to know that Southern Oil only uses locally-grown canola seeds to produce its canola oil – all of which come from canola crops that have not been genetically modified.

In fact, all canola crops in South Africa have been grown from non-GMO seeds, and Southern Oil regularly screens pressed canola oil and seeds to ensure that they meet regulatory standards.

The Smart Choice

When it comes to health credentials, B-well Canola Oil is one of the very few cooking oils to carry the CANSA Smart Choice Seal. This is due to it being very high in omega-3 fatty acids, an essential fatty acid that one’s body can only get through dietary intake.

A Westernised diet tends to be high in more inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids and low in foods that are sources of omega-3, so by simply switching to canola oil customers can easily increase their omega-3 intake.

“This oil, with an appreciable omega-3 fatty acid content, can contribute significantly to omega-3 fatty acid intake in South Africans,” says Megan Pentz-Kluyts, CANSA Nutrition and Dietetics consultant in her 2023 article Choose your Cooking Oil Wisely*. “In 2020, a study in the South African Medical Journal confirmed that plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, found in oils like canola may have a protective role against developing heart disease. Research has also shown that plant omega-3, found in oils like canola oil, is more anti-inflammatory and has other heart-healthy properties, like thinning the blood.”

The Cooking Oil with Heart

B-well Canola Oil also carries an endorsement from The Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa. It is naturally cholesterol-free, high in monounsaturated fats and has just 7% saturated fat – the lowest saturated fat content amongst common cooking oils.

Beyond its health benefits, canola oil is exceptionally versatile within the kitchen. Its light and neutral flavour make it easy to use in a wide variety of cooking applications, such as salad dressings, marinades, frying and grilling.
